Silicon Shadows- Exiting the Datasphere (Numenera)

Silicon Shadows

The most common way for entrants to the datasphere to exit is by means of their entry point. Whether their entry point remains open until they emerge, has an automatic recall system, or simply leaves them stranded them if they overstay their allowed time. Generally it takes something dramatic to make an exception to this basic rule.

Standard Departure
A character that leaves according to the datasphere by normal means takes up their base Numenera character sheet. Points spent from the character's pools are lost as all but the most rudimentary datasphere translation incorporates and interprets the full rang of physical sense and biochemical energy use. Experience points gained and spent translate 1:1, as do Cyphers and Strange Artifacts and oddities, though recursion-specific Artifacts or mundane equipment do not normally.

Overstaying
The first time-based risk characters exploring the datasphere directly encounter is the risk of their access points closing. While the best methods of entry either remain open indefinitely or exercise a recall function, many will either dump them out violently or, in possibly the worst case, leave them stranded. Becoming stranded is generally only a risk to characters who have experienced matter-energy conversion.

Conversely, one of the key benefits of matter-energy translation into the datasphere is that there is no concern about physical bodies. If a character remains projected inside the datasphere too long their bodies will eventually die of thirst, hunger, or simple atrophy unless someone maintains them. A character who is dying in this manner is perfectly aware of what is happening unless some other effect prevents it.

Avatar Incapacitation/Death
If a character's avatar within the datasphere is incapacitated or dies the character suffers the same fate through the biofeedback inherent in projection setups. The fate of their avatar is determined by the digital environment. Appropriate aid rendered in the datasphere benefits the character. If time is a pressure an avatar which is incapacitated or dead can be pushed back out into the real world through their access point, allowing aid to be rendered there.

Not much to say here, technically speaking. I feel a little like I've gotten lazy at the end, but I also think I've covered much of this about as well as needed already, just filling in some details here. My next post will be a set of navigation links / table of contents to the Silicon Shadows series of posts and I'll put some closing thoughts on the datasphere and its spiritual forebears there...
