New Maneuvers; Defender Sub-Archetype (D&D 5e)

The following maneuvers are available to the Battle Master archetype of the fighter class;

Castle. When an enemy moves, regardless of whether they would normally provoke an attack of opportunity, if they are within reach of your weapon you may spend a superiority die to make a melee weapon attack against them as a reaction. If you hit with this attack, add the roll of the superiority die to the damage.

Gate. When you make an attack against an enemy that is moving you may expend a superiority die. If you hit with the attack add the roll of the superiority die to the damage roll and their movement immediately ends.

Press. When you make an attack against a moving enemy you may expend a superiority dice. If you hit with the attack you add the superiority die to the damage roll, then you may move 5'.

Toll. When you make an attack of opportunity against an enemy which is moving you may expend a superiority dice. You also may add your superiority die roll to both the attack and damage roll.

When the Unearthed Arcana revision for the 5e Ranger came out one of the things that excited me most was the move away from the narrow "Beastmaster" and "Hunter" to the more general, flavorful, and extendable Spirit Paths. While I think there's still a lot of work to be done to develop the concept into something as iconic as wizard schools or cleric domains it's a step in the right direction. Like paladin oaths, bardic colleges, and druid circles; this sort of subclass is vastly more flavorful and extendable than the "Archetypes" slapped onto most of the martial classes in the base 5e. Possibly more importantly, these sorts of concept subclasses make the entire class easier to balance because they don't replace huge tracks of the class with each different variant.
I, personally, find the Battle Master archetype the most versatile roots for this sort of expansion, with a core feature that is simple to use, but can be specialized into a variety of combat styles. Further, such sets of maneuvers can go a long way towards mitigating the problems I've discussed previously regarding the LFQW issue. Given the more recent Unearthed Arcana Cavalier and Scout, the writers at TSR appear to agree with me on this. Hopefully a 5.5 type revision will do away with the bland "Archetypes" for the classes still stuck with them and give each class more interesting subdivisions.
